Tyraxes

The pale violet dragon of Rhaenyra's youngest son by Laenor, Prince Joffrey. His purple flames were noted in George R.R. Martin's own notes. Kept chained in the Dragonpit through the Dance, he and Joffrey never flew a single battle together. Both died on the same night at the Storming of the Dragonpit.

Tyraxes was a young dragon of House Targaryen hatched on Dragonstone in the early 120s AC and bonded to Prince Joffrey Velaryon, son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. As a cradle dragon, Tyraxes was raised alongside his rider but had not yet reached full maturity by the time of the Dance of the Dragons. At the onset of the war, he remained smaller and less developed than the older dragons that dominated the conflict, and was not initially deployed in major engagements.

Tyraxes was later brought to King’s Landing after Rhaenyra Targaryen secured the city. There, he was kept within the Dragonpit along with several other dragons, reflecting the increasing reliance on confinement rather than free-ranging growth during the later Targaryen period. His rider, Joffrey Velaryon, was still young and had limited opportunity to ride him in combat.

During the Storming of the Dragonpit in 130 AC, Tyraxes was among the dragons trapped within the structure when it was overrun by a mob of smallfolk. The confined environment and the sheer number of attackers created conditions in which even dragons were vulnerable. Tyraxes, being young and unable to escape, was overwhelmed during the assault. Accounts suggest he was attacked repeatedly by the mob and died within the pit during the chaos and destruction.

Tyraxes’s death occurred alongside several other dragons during the same event, marking one of the most devastating losses of dragonlife in the history of Westeros. Unlike the great war dragons that fell in open battle, Tyraxes died without having fully entered the conflict, a casualty of civil unrest rather than strategic engagement.

Tyraxes is remembered as one of the younger dragons lost during the Dance of the Dragons and as part of the generation that never reached its full potential. His death reflects the vulnerability of dragons raised in captivity and the broader decline of Targaryen dragon power during the final stages of the war.
