The Lost Dragons of the Freehold refer to the vast number of dragons that existed under Valyrian control prior to the Doom, the overwhelming majority of which were destroyed or disappeared during the catastrophe. Unlike the limited number of dragons brought to Dragonstone by House Targaryen, the Freehold maintained hundreds of dragons across dozens of dragonlord families.
These dragons were not uniform in size or function. Valyrian breeding practices are believed to have produced specialized lineages adapted for siege warfare, naval dominance, high-altitude scouting, and urban control. The Targaryens, as a lesser dragonlord family, are thought to have possessed only a fraction of the most advanced or powerful breeds.
The destruction of the Freehold resulted in the near-total loss of these lineages. Few, if any, surviving dragons from Valyria are confirmed outside those carried to Dragonstone. This loss represents not only a reduction in number, but the disappearance of entire categories of dragon development.
The existence of these lost dragons is central to the theory that the dragons known in Westeros were not the peak of Valyrian power, but a surviving subset. This perspective reframes dragons such as Balerion and Vhagar as formidable within Westeros, but potentially inferior to the greatest specimens once bred in Valyria.
