ASOIAF Dragon Lore
The Last Dragon
The final dragon of the Targaryen dynasty. Sickly green and white, no larger than a dog, with stunted twisted wings that could never bear it in flight and a warped neck. It laid five clutches of eggs in its lifetime — none ever hatched. It died in 153 AC during the reign of Aegon III, ending the age of dragons for 146 years.

The Last Dragon was the final known living dragon of House Targaryen, hatched during the reign of King Aegon III Targaryen, known as the Dragonbane. By the time of its birth, the great age of dragons had already ended, following the widespread destruction of dragonkind during the Dance of the Dragons. Unlike the powerful dragons of earlier generations, the Last Dragon was small, weak, and deformed, marking a stark contrast to the creatures that had once dominated the skies of Westeros.
Accounts describe the Last Dragon as stunted in growth, never reaching a size capable of flight or combat. Its wings were undersized, and it lacked the strength and vitality typical of earlier dragons. Despite efforts made during Aegon III’s reign to restore the dragon population, including attempts to hatch additional eggs, none succeeded in producing healthy dragons. The Last Dragon thus represents the final failure of these efforts and the end of the Targaryen dragonline in Westeros.
The creature lived a short and uneventful life, confined and closely observed as the last remnant of a once-dominant species. It died during the same reign in which it was born, bringing an end to the era of dragons that had begun with the rise of Valyria and continued through Aegon’s Conquest. Its death marked the point at which dragons became creatures of history and legend rather than living forces within the world.
The extinction of dragons had significant consequences for the balance of power in Westeros. Without dragons, House Targaryen lost its greatest military advantage, and the political landscape shifted accordingly. The memory of dragons persisted in stories, records, and the preserved skulls within the Red Keep, but no living dragon remained to carry that legacy forward.
The Last Dragon is remembered not for power or achievement, but as a symbol of decline and finality. Where earlier dragons embodied conquest and dominance, this creature marked the quiet end of that era. Its brief and diminished existence stands as the final chapter in the history of dragons in Westeros, closing a lineage that had shaped the fate of kingdoms for centuries.
