Tharaxia, known as the Mother, is described in fan-compiled Valyrian cosmology as the progenitor of the Pyraethran pantheon and the formative force behind the volcanic structure of the Valyrian peninsula. Within these traditions, she is regarded as the origin point of controlled fire within the world, not merely as a wielder of flame, but as the entity responsible for shaping its sources. Her role is foundational, preceding the structured systems of dragonlord rule and existing at the level of mythic formation.
The physical form attributed to Tharaxia is classified as a Pyroclast Matron, a designation associated with extreme scale and geological interaction. She is described as possessing a wingspan of approximately 982 feet, placing her among the largest divine dragon forms in extended lore. Her body is characterized by layered white and crimson armor-like plating, with visible heat distortion at each joint, suggesting constant thermal output beneath the surface. Her posture is consistently described as grounded and immovable, often positioned as if guarding elevated volcanic ledges.
According to these accounts, Tharaxia’s most significant act was the shaping of the Fourteen Flames. She is said to have descended from a primordial source referred to as Pyraethra and used two original volcanic vents—identified in tradition as the Twin Anvils—to initiate the formation of the volcanic chain. These vents were later consecrated and associated with foundational elements of Valyrian fire, forming the basis for the geothermal system that sustained the Freehold.
Tharaxia’s defining ability is referred to as Vent-Calm Cataclysm, a phenomenon through which she exerts direct control over volcanic activity. Within these traditions, she is described as capable of suppressing active vents to complete stillness or inducing large-scale eruptions through directed influence. This ability extends beyond isolated vents to regional geological systems, suggesting control over both pressure and release within the earth’s crust.
Secondary effects attributed to her movement include the vitrification of terrain. Surfaces in direct contact with her are described as transforming into glass-like material, indicating extreme localized heat and pressure. These effects are not depicted as destructive acts alone, but as processes of shaping—altering the physical environment into stable or structured forms aligned with her influence.
Tharaxia is also identified as the progenitor of the Fourteen Pyraethran deities, though the nature of this relationship varies across accounts. Some traditions interpret this as direct creation, while others present it as a hierarchical emergence from her domain of fire. In either case, she is positioned above them in both origin and scale, functioning as a central figure from which their individual aspects derive.
Within the broader structure of divine dragon forms, Tharaxia occupies the role of origin and control. Where other entities govern application—law, navigation, or diplomacy—she governs source. As a Pyroclast Matron, she represents the principle that all structured fire, whether used for creation or destruction, must first be formed and contained. Her presence defines the boundary between raw volcanic force and the ordered systems that later civilizations would build upon it.
