Terrax
The dragon of Princess Jaenara Belaerys of Valyria, who flew him for three full years over Sothoryos during the Century of Blood — the longest exploratory flight in dragon history. Jaenara returned to report that Sothoryos was 'a land without end,' vast as Essos or vaster. Both dragon and rider died centuries before the Conquest.

Terrax is a dragon attributed in some accounts to the Valyrian explorer Jaenara Belaerys, a dragonlord said to have undertaken a prolonged expedition across the continent of Sothoryos prior to the Doom of Valyria. Unlike the dragons of House Targaryen, Terrax does not appear in confirmed maester records or primary Westerosi chronicles, and his existence is considered unverified within canonical histories. References to Terrax are drawn primarily from fragmentary accounts, travel lore, and later interpretations of Valyrian exploration.
According to these accounts, Terrax served as the mount of Jaenara Belaerys during her reported journey into Sothoryos, a land largely unmapped and considered hostile to human settlement. The dragon is described in broad terms as capable of sustained long-distance flight, suitable for exploration rather than warfare. No consistent physical description of Terrax has survived, and details regarding size, coloration, or temperament vary widely depending on the source.
The primary association between Terrax and Jaenara Belaerys stems from references to a dragonrider who spent years traveling across Sothoryos without reaching its southern limits before eventually returning to Valyria. While Jaenara Belaerys is mentioned in canonical texts as an explorer, the name of her dragon is not recorded in those sources, leading to uncertainty regarding Terrax’s authenticity.
No record exists of Terrax participating in war, breeding, or interaction with the dragonlines that later formed the Targaryen dynasty. Similarly, there are no confirmed accounts of Terrax’s fate following the alleged expedition. If the dragon did exist, it is presumed that he perished during or before the Doom of Valyria, though this remains speculative.
Terrax occupies a unique position in dragon lore as a figure tied to the limits of recorded knowledge rather than established history. His association with Sothoryos and Valyrian exploration reflects the broader mystery surrounding the extent of the Freehold’s reach and the capabilities of dragons beyond warfare. Within the context of a codex, Terrax is best understood as a possible but unconfirmed element of Valyrian history, illustrating how much of that world was lost with the Doom and how little of it can now be verified with certainty.
