ASOIAF Dragon Lore
Syrax
The yellow she-dragon of Queen Rhaenyra, named for a goddess of Old Valyria. Claimed by Rhaenyra at age seven — the first dragon she named herself. She laid clutches of eggs that became Vermax, Arrax, Tyraxes, and Morning. Kept chained and well-fed, she was never used in battle. She was killed by the mob at the Storming of the Dragonpit in 130 AC.

Syrax was a dragon of House Targaryen and the mount of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, later claimant to the Iron Throne during the Dance of the Dragons. Hatched on Dragonstone during the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, Syrax was named for an ancient Valyrian goddess and was bonded to Rhaenyra from a young age. By the time of the civil war, she was a mature dragon and one of the principal mounts of the Black faction.
Syrax was described as having yellow scales, with a large and well-fed build by the time of the Dance. Unlike some of the more aggressive or battle-hardened dragons of the period, Syrax had spent much of her life in relative comfort, often kept near Dragonstone or King’s Landing and used more for travel and ceremony than for sustained warfare. She produced several clutches of eggs over her lifetime, contributing significantly to the Targaryen dragon population prior to its decline.
During the Dance of the Dragons, Syrax was present at several key moments but saw limited direct combat. She carried Rhaenyra between Dragonstone and King’s Landing and remained a central symbol of her claim. However, Syrax was not deployed in major battlefield engagements to the same extent as dragons such as Caraxes or Vhagar, and her experience in sustained combat appears to have been limited.
Syrax’s death occurred during the Storming of the Dragonpit in 130 AC, when a mob of smallfolk rose against the dragons in King’s Landing. Although she was not confined within the Dragonpit at the time, Syrax descended into the city during the chaos. Accounts suggest that she attacked the crowd but did not maintain altitude, instead coming to ground among the attackers. This proved fatal. Surrounded and overwhelmed, Syrax was brought down by sheer numbers, with attackers using weapons and the environment to kill her.
Syrax’s death is often cited as an example of the vulnerability of even large dragons when removed from the advantages of flight and confronted by determined attackers in confined conditions. Her fall, alongside the destruction of the dragons within the Dragonpit, marked a significant turning point in the Dance of the Dragons and contributed to the near-extinction of dragons in Westeros.
Syrax is remembered as one of the primary dragons of the Black faction and as a symbol of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s claim. Her life reflects the later stage of Targaryen dragon use, where dragons were increasingly raised in controlled environments and not always prepared for the demands of sustained warfare. Her death, like many others during the Dance, illustrates the broader decline of dragonkind during the conflict.
