Stormcloud

The cradle-bonded dragon of young Aegon, the future Aegon III the Dragonbane. Never ridden before his one and only flight — a panicked escape from a Triarchy attack at sea. He carried Aegon back to Dragonstone riddled with arrows and a scorpion bolt, and died within the hour. Aegon never rode another dragon.

Stormcloud was a young dragon of House Targaryen hatched on Dragonstone in the early 120s AC and bonded to Prince Aegon Targaryen, later King Aegon III. As a cradle dragon, Stormcloud was raised alongside his rider from infancy, though he remained small and underdeveloped throughout the Dance of the Dragons. By the final phase of the war, Stormcloud had only just reached a size sufficient to carry Aegon in flight, and lacked the strength and endurance of older dragons. Stormcloud’s role in the Dance of the Dragons was limited but significant. In 130 AC, during the fall of Dragonstone to forces loyal to King Aegon II Targaryen, Prince Aegon was placed upon Stormcloud in an attempt to escape capture. Despite his youth and limited strength, Stormcloud successfully carried Aegon away from the island, flying across Blackwater Bay toward safety. During the escape, Stormcloud was pursued and struck by enemy attacks, sustaining severe injuries while in flight. Despite these wounds, he continued flying long enough to deliver Aegon to safety. The effort proved fatal. Stormcloud collapsed and died shortly after completing the journey, having exhausted himself under the strain of flight while wounded. Stormcloud’s death ensured the survival of Aegon III, who would later ascend to the Iron Throne following the conclusion of the Dance of the Dragons. His actions are therefore considered strategically significant despite his lack of participation in direct combat. Unlike many dragons of the war, Stormcloud did not engage in battle or contribute to large-scale destruction, but instead played a decisive role in preserving the Targaryen line. Stormcloud is remembered as one of the youngest dragons to die during the Dance of the Dragons and as an example of the vulnerability of dragons that had not yet reached maturity. His death highlights the increasing fragility of Targaryen dragon power during the latter stages of the war, as younger and weaker dragons were drawn into conflict without the strength to survive it.
