Silverwing was a dragon of House Targaryen hatched on Dragonstone during the reign of Aegon I Targaryen. She was bonded to Queen Alysanne Targaryen, the sister-wife of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, and became one of the most well-traveled dragons of her time. Silverwing was described as having shining silver scales, giving her a bright and distinctive appearance in flight. She was known for a comparatively calm temperament, particularly during her years with Queen Alysanne, and was frequently used for long-distance travel rather than warfare.

Under Alysanne Targaryen, Silverwing flew across much of Westeros, including journeys to the North and beyond the Wall. During one such flight, Silverwing refused to cross the Wall despite repeated attempts, an event noted in historical accounts as unusual behavior for a dragon. This incident has been interpreted as evidence of unknown forces or boundaries affecting dragonkind, though no definitive explanation has been recorded.

Following the death of Queen Alysanne in 100 AC, Silverwing remained without a rider for several decades. She continued to reside primarily on Dragonstone, living in relative isolation compared to other dragons that were actively used during the later Targaryen reigns. Her longevity and survival into the time of the Dance of the Dragons made her one of the oldest living dragons at the onset of the conflict.

During the Red Sowing in 130 AC, Silverwing was claimed by Ulf White, a dragonseed who later became known as Ulf the White. With Silverwing as his mount, Ulf joined the forces supporting Rhaenyra Targaryen, significantly strengthening the Black faction’s dragon power. However, Ulf’s loyalty proved unreliable, and he later defected during the conflict, aligning himself with opposing forces during the later stages of the war.

Silverwing participated in the events surrounding the First Battle of Tumbleton, where her presence contributed to one of the largest concentrations of dragons during the Dance. Unlike several other dragons engaged in the fighting, Silverwing survived the battle. Following these events, she did not take part in further major engagements and was noted to have remained largely inactive during the final phase of the war.

After the Dance of the Dragons, Silverwing’s fate becomes uncertain. She is believed to have survived the conflict and lived on without a rider, possibly remaining in the Reach or returning to Dragonstone. No confirmed record of her death exists, making her one of the few dragons of the era whose ultimate fate is unknown.

Silverwing is remembered as one of the longest-lived and most widely traveled dragons of the Targaryen dynasty. Her early life reflects the height of Targaryen power and stability under Jaehaerys I, while her later years illustrate the fragmentation and decline of dragonkind during the Dance of the Dragons. Her survival beyond the war sets her apart from many of her contemporaries, marking her as one of the last enduring dragons of her generation.
