Seasmoke was a dragon of House Targaryen hatched on Dragonstone during the later years of the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen. He was first bonded to Ser Laenor Velaryon, son of Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen, making him one of the dragons closely associated with House Velaryon during the height of Targaryen power. Seasmoke was described as a pale grey dragon, his coloration reminiscent of mist over the sea, which gave rise to his name.

Under Laenor Velaryon, Seasmoke was used during the early campaigns of the Dance of the Dragons. He took part in the assault on the Stepstones and later played a role in the early naval and coastal operations supporting Rhaenyra Targaryen’s claim. Following Laenor’s death, Seasmoke remained riderless for a time, though notably did not depart Dragonstone, suggesting a continued attachment to his former rider or territory.

During the Red Sowing in 130 AC, Seasmoke was successfully claimed by Addam of Hull, a Velaryon bastard later legitimized as Addam Velaryon. This marked one of the rare instances of a dragon accepting a second rider after the death of its first. Under Addam, Seasmoke became an active participant in the latter stages of the Dance, reinforcing the Black faction’s dragon strength during a critical phase of the war.

Seasmoke’s final engagement occurred during the Second Battle of Tumbleton in 130 AC. Addam Velaryon remained loyal to Rhaenyra despite accusations of betrayal against other dragonseeds. During the battle, Seasmoke engaged enemy dragons, including Vermithor and Tessarion, in one of the largest and most chaotic dragon battles of the war. The fighting resulted in the deaths of multiple dragons and riders, with Seasmoke ultimately being killed in the conflict. Addam Velaryon also perished, having chosen to prove his loyalty through direct combat rather than flight.

Seasmoke is remembered as one of the few dragons to accept multiple riders and as a symbol of loyalty during a period marked by betrayal and shifting allegiances. His role in the Second Battle of Tumbleton places him among the dragons that contributed to the final destructive phase of the Dance of the Dragons. Though not among the largest dragons of his time, Seasmoke’s adaptability and combat presence ensured his lasting place in the history of Targaryen dragon warfare.
