Hoarfang, known as Northmoon, is described in fan-compiled dragon lore as the archetypal Ice Dragon of the far northern world, associated with the polar regions beyond the known boundaries of Essos. Unlike Valyrian dragons or even other recorded wild variants, Hoarfang is consistently portrayed as a creature of extreme scale and elemental specialization, existing entirely outside the influence of human civilization.

Hoarfang is said to possess a wingspan exceeding 900 feet, placing him among the largest known dragon forms in extended lore. His physical structure is described as semi-translucent, with ice-blue scales that give the appearance of a body formed from living frost. This unique composition distinguishes him from other Ice Dragons, suggesting a form adapted not merely to cold environments, but fully integrated with them. Observers in these accounts often describe difficulty in distinguishing the dragon from surrounding ice and sky, particularly during flight over frozen seas.

The defining characteristic attributed to Hoarfang is his ability to manipulate extreme cold at a scale beyond that of other Ice Dragons. His breath is described as capable of freezing sea-spray in mid-air, instantly transforming moisture into suspended ice. This phenomenon is interpreted not only as a weaponized ability, but as a large-scale environmental effect, contributing to the rapid formation and stabilization of pack ice in polar regions.

Hoarfang is loosely associated in these accounts with exploratory records attributed to House Belaerys, whose long-range voyages are said to have extended far enough north to confirm his existence. However, no direct interaction between the dragon and any rider or controlling force is recorded. Like Frostvein, Hoarfang is presented as entirely wild, with no evidence of domestication or attempted bonding.

Though never involved in formal warfare, Hoarfang’s presence is described as having indirect but significant effects on northern trade and navigation. His influence over ice formation is said to have altered sea routes, trapping fleets and reshaping navigable passages in the Shivering Sea. These disruptions are not framed as intentional acts, but as byproducts of his movement and activity within the region.

The fate of Hoarfang remains unknown. No confirmed record of his death exists, and some northern accounts suggest that he continues to circle the polar regions into the present era. These claims are unverified, but persist in maritime and exploratory traditions, reinforcing his status as a continuing presence rather than a historical remnant.

Hoarfang occupies a singular position within dragon lore as the apex expression of Ice Dragon classification. Where Valyrian dragons represent controlled fire and conquest, and other wild dragons represent untamed aggression, Hoarfang embodies environmental dominance through cold. Within fan-extended frameworks, he is regarded not as a participant in history, but as a force that shapes it indirectly—an enduring presence at the edge of the known world.
