Frostvein, the Glass Maw
[FANFILL] Carver of glass-smooth ice canyons with super-cold breath. Wingspan 800 ft. Ice Dragon. No bonded rider. His last sighting showed him carving glassy canyons far north of Lorath; the canyons he cut still exist in the polar ice today.

Frostvein, known as the Glass Maw, is described in fan-compiled dragon lore as a colossal Ice Dragon associated with the polar regions north of Essos, particularly beyond Lorath and into the Shivering Sea. Unlike Valyrian dragons, Frostvein is not tied to the Freehold or any known dragonlord lineage and is instead presented as a naturally occurring apex creature adapted to extreme cold environments.
Frostvein is consistently described as possessing a wingspan estimated at approximately 800 feet, placing him among the largest non-Valyrian dragon forms recorded in extended lore. His physical characteristics include ice-blue scales and a physiology suited to subzero climates. Rather than producing flame, Frostvein is said to exhale a super-cooled breath capable of flash-freezing surfaces, creating glass-smooth ice formations rather than melting or burning terrain.
This ability is central to Frostvein’s defining behavior. He is described as having carved vast canyon systems into polar ice sheets over extended periods, using repeated passes of freezing breath to fracture and reshape the landscape. These formations, often referred to as “glass canyons,” are depicted as smooth-walled ice corridors that persist long after their creation, resistant to natural erosion due to the density and structure of the frozen material.
Frostvein’s existence is not associated with warfare or human interaction in the traditional sense. He is not recorded as having a rider, nor is he linked to any house or controlling authority. However, his long-term environmental impact is noted in indirect ways. Accounts suggest that the shifting ice formations he created forced adjustments to maritime and over-ice routes used by Essosi traders and expeditions, thereby influencing logistical patterns during minor conflicts and trade movements in the northern regions.
The last reported sighting of Frostvein places him far north of Lorath, actively carving new formations into the ice. No confirmed record of his death exists, and his continued survival remains speculative. The persistence of the ice canyons attributed to him is often cited as indirect evidence of his former presence, though no recent sightings are recorded in reliable sources.
Frostvein occupies a distinct category within dragon lore as a non-Valyrian, environment-shaping entity. Unlike the fire-based dragons of the Freehold, his influence is defined by transformation through cold rather than destruction through heat. Within fan-extended frameworks, he represents the theoretical counterpart to Embermaw and forge-based dragon classifications—demonstrating that dragonkind, if not bound to Valyrian systems, may manifest in forms adapted to entirely different elemental conditions.
