Aurion’s dragon is one of the most significant yet least documented dragons in recorded history, associated with the only known dragonlord to attempt a return to Valyria after the Doom. Aurion, a dragonlord who proclaimed himself Emperor of Valyria in the aftermath of the catastrophe, marched with an army and his dragon into the ruins of the Freehold. Neither he nor his forces were ever seen again.

The dragon itself is not described in surviving records, though its existence is confirmed by multiple historical accounts referencing Aurion’s campaign. As a Valyrian war dragon active immediately after the Doom, it is presumed to have been of considerable size and combat capability, likely comparable to late Freehold-era mounts.

The disappearance of Aurion and his dragon is one of the greatest unresolved mysteries in the history of Valyria. Unlike later accounts of ruined cities or abandoned territories, this expedition ended in complete silence, with no survivors, wreckage, or confirmed sightings. This has led to speculation that whatever remained within Valyria after the Doom was capable of destroying both a dragonlord and his mount without leaving trace.

Aurion’s dragon is significant not for recorded deeds, but for its association with the last known attempt to reclaim Valyria. Its loss reinforces the idea that the Doom did not merely destroy the Freehold, but left behind forces or conditions that continued to pose a lethal threat even to dragons.
